During summer months the Evening Breeze Cooling System (air-conditioning) is fitted over the beds and during winter months an electric blanket and extra blankets are provided.
In addition to the main lounge and dining area, there is a plunge pool and a boma for dining under the stars, complemented by wines from an excellent wine cellar. Jao also has a spa where a wide range of massage therapies are offered and a gym for the more active. The camp itself perfectly mirrors the beauty of the Delta and allows an effortless entry into the wonders of this pristine wetland paradise.
• Day and night drives in open 4x4 Land Rovers each accommodating a maximum of 6 guests, allowing each guest an outside seat (night drives are not possible when the flood is high)
• Water-based activities in 2-seater mokoros, and 12-seater boats used, in the waterways to the east of camp
• Full day game drives and picnics on Hunda Island - a 45min boat ride away from Jao Camp - mainly available during times of high water levels
• Fishing on a catch-and-release basis except January and February when fishing is barred by law for breeding. The camp offers spinner rods with a small selection of lures. Fly fishing equipment must be supplied by the guest
• Guided nature walks (seasonal and subject to availability, therefore pre-booking is essential)
• Birding (internationally recognised IBA – Important Bird Area)
• Stargazing with a spotting scope
• The Jao Star-Bed is approximately 20 minutes drive from camp and due to its location and inaccessibility during high water, this activity is seasonal. It sleeps a maximum of two guests on a queen-size bed with a large mosquito net. There is a long drop toilet, radio, torch, and flasks of tea/coffee. Guests are accompanied by a guide who sleeps in a tent nearby
• Sleep outs in the salas of rooms 06, 07, 08 and 09 are possible due to their height off the ground
• Scenic helicopter flights offering a birds-eye view of the ecosystem and an insight into its formation, flights range between 30, 45 to 60 minutes. This is an optional activity available at an additional cost which can be settled directly in camp
The camp also offers their guests bean bags to steady their camera while on a game activity. Hot water bottles (during winter months and on early morning game drives only) are also provided on game drives.
The game viewing at Jao is superb. Huge herds of red lechwe can be seen, followed by their primary predator - prides of lion. Other game typical of the area includes elephant, buffalo, leopard, tsessebe, zebra, hippo and crocodile as well as the uncommon sitatunga and spotted-necked otter.
Birding is exceptional in the Jao Concession, withthe vulnerable wattled crane, slaty egret, rosy-throated longclaw, Pel’s fishing-owl, and lesser jacana to be seen in the wetter areas. Other exciting species include the swamp nightjar and brown firefinch while Meyer's parrot, African harrier hawk, black heron, coppery-tailed coucal, and black crake are also resident at Jao.

• Children 6 years and older are welcome at Jao Camp. Families travelling with children between 6 and 12 years must book private safari activities which are subject to an additional cost. Children between 6 and 16 years must share with an adult/s in the same tent. The minimum age for boating activities is 6 years, and for mokoro activities is 13 years (water levels permitting)
