Kalahari Plains is set in a remote part of the diverse and productive Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) and offers some of the best summer wildlife viewing opportunities in Africa. Located in the Kalahari Desert biome in the central part of Botswana, this reserve is the largest conservation area in the country and one of the largest in the world. Its star attractions include the legendary Kalahari black-maned lion as well as some of the world's best cheetah viewing.
Kalahari Plains Camp is perfectly situated overlooking an immense pan with endless horizons and beautiful skies. It comprises eight en-suite canvas units with a sleep-out above each from which to enjoy moonlit or star-studded nights. It is involved in a number of conservation initiatives that include wild dog research and works closely with local communities.

There is also a private rooftop area for sleep-outs, to enjoy the night skies and allowing good views over the pan and plains (weather permitting). During winter months hot water bottles and extra blankets are provided.
The main area consists of a lounge and dining area with a swimming pool and deck. Solar power provides all the electricity and hot water in the camp and insulated canvas walls and roof keep temperatures inside the units comfortable.
As Kalahari Plains Camp is located in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, it adheres to all the Department of Wildlife and National Parks regulations including no off-road driving or night driving.
• Day game drives are carried out in 10-seater, open, 4x4 Land Rovers each accommodating a maximum of 7 guests allowing each guest an outside seat
• Day trips to the renowned Deception Valley are available, with a picnic brunch (only possible on a 3 night minimum stay - alternatively on a stay of 2 nights, to guarantee the excursion, a private vehicle must be booked at an additional cost
• A guided bushman walk (led by camp staff members who are descendants of the San Bushmen and within close proximity to the camp (800 metres) is also available. The experience enables an understanding of how the San Bushmen lived and survived in the harsh Kalahari desert as well as gaining an insight in to the ancient San culture and their humble and gentle approach within the family units and with the environment
• The Kalahari Game Reserve is an internationally recognised IBA (Important Birding Area) Over 220 bird species including significant populations of regionally threatened and arid-west endemic species including memorable species like Crimson-breasted Shrike, Violet-eared Waxbill and Southern Pied Babbler
• Each guest tent also has a sleep-out platform located above their unit, under the stars. Accessed by stairs from the deck it enables stargazing with a laser pointer. The Kalahari is famous for its clear night skies, and with no light pollution it is the ideal spot from which to view the incredible formations of the stars and planets. Our guides are also known to dabble with astronomy and will take you on a tour through the constellations
Healthy wildlife populations are present in the area all year round, but with the advent of the summer rains, the desert comes to life. A plethora of plains game such as springbok and gemsbok converge in their hundreds to graze, followed by lion, one of the highest concentrations of cheetah in southern Africa and leopard. In winter, the Kalahari is a typical desert. General game is still easily seen, from the carnivores to wildebeest, red hartebeest and steenbok as well as small predators like black-backed jackal, Cape fox, honey badger and myriad mongoose species.
Some 220 bird species have been recorded, with regionally threatened species like Kori Bustard and Lappet-faced Vulture and arid-west endemic species such as Burchell’s Sandgrouse, Grey-backed Sparrowlark, Kalahari Scrub-Robin and African Wren-Warbler.

• 8 en-suite canvas units raised off the ground, with sandy pathways on the ground. Being located in the desert, the canvas and roofs have been specially insulated to keep out most of the heat during the day and the cold during the night

• Children 6 years and older are welcome at Kalahari Plains Camp. For families travelling with children between 6 and 12 years, private activities need to be booked and paid for additionally. Children between 6 and 16 years must share with an adult/s in the same room. The minimum age for walking and sleep-out activities is 13 years
• Game drives & walks and interesting excursions available
• Private rooftop area for sleep-outs, to enjoy the night skies and allowing good views over the pan and plains (weather permitting)
• 100% solar powered (solar panels and inverters provide electricity and hot water). A generator is used for emergencies. Guests are requested to keep water usage to a minimum in this desert environment
• No Wi-Fi access, allowing guests to be fully emerged in their surroundings
• Ceiling fans & pedestal fans are used to keep a breeze flowing in the guest tents
